Counselling and Psychotherapy

Generally it is considered psychotherapists are trained and qualified at Post-Graduate level and counselling training starting at certificate level.   Both terms refer to the practice of facilitating an environment whereby a process of change is initiated within the person, followed  with progression to experiencing a more comfortable or acceptable way of being in the present and  with optimism for the future.

The Psychological Therapy I offer Is based upon a collaborative endeavour underpinned by research which  suggests the success  of therapy as being very much dependent on the relationship between the practitioner and the client. Therefore when considering your choice of therapist, think about seeking  out a a person  with whom you are comfortable with, are they  prepared to answer any questions you have about the service they offer on your first contact? How does their code of practice support you? Does the practitioner have experience fitting to your needs .

FAQ’s

Appointments

Your  first appointment will be an opportunity to explore how you can benefit from counselling or psychotherapy  and will last for 50 minutes. If you decide you would like to engage in therapy we will use some of this time to establish a  contract based on an agreed way of working together. Subsequent appointments will be at an agreed time for a duration of 50 minutes.

Do you work with any issues?

It’s impossible to say that I have worked with all types of issues, what’s an issue to one person may not be to another,  I think it’s more appropriate for me to say I have worked with people who have presented with mild distress and anxiety  - for instance struggling with making a decision  and also people who are receiving psychiatric support and suffering with complex symptoms.  There are occasions where I might refer you on to a specialist service or your GP.

How long will I need to attend?

As a person centred practitioner, I have no desire to ask you to attend for appointments for any longer than is necessary or appropriate for your needs or circumstances.   You are invited to engage openly in feedback as to how you are progressing both in and outside of the therapeutic relationship so the therapy contract may be adjusted to your needs.
